My ship of Theseus PC is a hilarious combo right now: an i7-7700k paired with a 6900 XT. And it's going to stay that way until something dies. I refuse to participate in this market, no matter what special edition bullshit comes out.

Similar situation here. R5 5600X, RTX 3070, 32GB DDR4, and absolutely no incentive to upgrade. I wouldn't give a shit to upgrade even if we lived in a pre-AI, pre-COVID scalping market and everything was priced fairly like it was in the GTX 10-series days. But I certainly will not be paying $700 for a fucking M.2 drive or RAM kit. Fuck alllllll the way off.

I've got a similar build - the only thing I'd consider upgrading is the CPU to an X3D but honestly that's chasing the last few drops. All games run great on pretty high settings and stable 60 - which is enough for me.

I'm the same but with a 9070XT. The newer GPU is for driver compatibility or I'd still have a 3060ti.

My i7-4790k still rips. Granted, it only rips on a few cores at a time, and it's missing some of the bandwidth and features and functions and stuff that newer processors get, but it also lets me disable TPM and shit and didn't support Windows 11 and forced me onto Linux, so I'll always be eternally grateful to it for that.

Had one of those. Top of the line. Binned by Win11 four years after release. Nail in the MS coffin for me.

You sure everything's been changed out? Case, PSU, hard drive?

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I haven't built a 100% new build desktop since like 2008.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

OK? That's not what I asked. I was asking if every single component had been changed out since then. A case from 1997 would still work.

Nvidia is resurrecting 3060 12gb, a 5 year old gpu.

Something similar happening in the smartphone industry. 4G-only smartphones are making a comeback in the $200-$300 range...Imagine buying a new 4G-only smartphone for $300 in 2026 which obviously won't even have a midrange processor as currently (but soon might change) only low end especially UNISOC SoCs support 4G-only capabilities...what a time to live in!

I just got a fairphone 4, about half price second hand with a 5 year warranty. Still supports 5G though.

Did low end 4g phones ever really go away? I've been looking at them for a few years now and was always astonished that they never bothered upgrading to 5g.

[–] WPSteam@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Nope but they used to be priced reasonably but soon expect their prices to increase to 200-300 on average

I got lucky and upgraded from AM4 (5600X) to AM5 (7800X3D) just before prices went to shit, bought a 90€ DDR5 kit last year in October and now just looking to get a GPU, but it looks like my 6 year old RX6600XT will have to hold on for a while longer.

Keep going, my Ryzen 5 5600X will be cool again :)

[–] WPSteam@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Same for my 5800X

I upgraded to a 5700X3D for €200 two years ago and I'm very happy with my decision to upgrade my ageing AM4 desktop. I know that the difference is marginal to the 5800X3D, but I am seriously considering buying one, if the price is reasonable, just to keep my current computer alive just a little bit longer.

Same here (except mine was about $150 for a used? one from Aliexpress).

I'm slightly tempted by FOMO for the 5800X3D too, but realistically it's a single-digit-percentage difference and is definitely not worth it.

Globalism is breaking down and the first markets to go are going to be complicated manufacturing processes like chips, memory, screens etc.

There is a very good chance that as a society we won’t be able to advance let alone maintain the level of technology that the general population has enjoyed in the coming years.

[–] Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I bought one of these on launch day to replace my 3800x. Looks like I’ll be using it for a while longer.
