Lightning Whelk shell. Lightning Whelks are carnivorous snails. Lightning Whelk shells are ‘left handed’. If you turn the shell over, with the pointed end downward, the opening is always on the left. It is one of few marine snails that has whorls that turn leftward. This snail probably made it 3-5 years before it died. State shell of Texas.
