The KIDS Act just passed the House and it's on to the Senate now. Assuming this passes, it'll mark the end of online free speech and device ownership in the US.

Contact your Senators about it while you still can, I just got through writing both of mine.

require platforms to implement age verification technology for users accessing pornographic material

Wut. I understand (though i dont agree with) trying to limit children from accessing toxic social media sites with algorithms that encourage suicide

...but what argument could you possibly make for trying prevent teenagers from viewing pornography?!?

I will quit. 100% y'all can find me in the woods.

Thanks to your Sim card, yes. Yes we will find you.

Fuck capitalism under the tech bros. Me and my buddies have more tin cans and string than you could ever hope to control and we are working on our communications network as I type this. We don't need your toys and baubles.

With August recess just weeks away, the window for Congress to pass kids’ safety legislation this year is narrowing. Prospects of the package clearing both chambers are dim, as the House and Senate remain at an impasse over which of the competing child safety efforts lawmakers should coalesce around — and if such a proposal should block or replace some state artificial intelligence laws.

at least there is one good part

Anyone have on hand an easy list of who voted for this bill so we can check how our reps voted?

Not if I can help it. They can't take away my device ownership if it has Linux installed on it.

One way they could do that is by web DRM blocking 'unapproved' OSes from loading stuff. Google reCAPTCHA is already laying the foundation for this.

I would rather dwell on an island which I could call my own, than live on the mainland and be watched and controlled.

i.e. screw the internet

I asked that a long time ago somewhere

but when testing with creepjs.org it always detected my OS as linux, no matter what browser or extensions I use or which useragent I set. But when I tried tor browser with js enabled it detected windows.

Does anybody know how tor does that and if so, how can it be applied to firefox or librewolf or whatever (either config or patch) ?

~~Bad archive site uses visitors for DDoSing and edits saved pages.~~

Changed the link to the original page. There's gotta be better archival sites if archive.today DDoSes and edits pages and the Wayback Machine is getting actively blocked by the major publications.

If saved pages are being edited.. We have arrived at 1984 sooner than expected

Where can I read more about that?

Ars Technica article, a section of its Wikipedia page, a related Wikipedia information page that also provides some alternative service suggestions. Lots of other places too.
