Experts have urged that the United Kingdom’s Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) receive full and sustained funding to meet emerging security threats posed by increasing military cooperation between Russia and China, according to the UK Defence Journal.

...

Dr. Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute described the next decade as “an acute period of risk,” citing Russia’s ongoing military buildup despite its heavy losses in Ukraine. He said European states need to strengthen ammunition supplies and airpower capabilities to avoid dependence on US intervention during potential future crises.

...

He also pointed to Japan’s central role in developing GCAP’s advanced features, given its proximity to China ... adding that Chinese weapons and sensors are likely to appear in Russian forces by the time GCAP’s Tempest fighter enters service in the 2030s and 2040s.

...

Bronk cautioned that conflicts involving Russia or China could trigger simultaneous crises ... “If war breaks out between Russia and NATO, the Chinese might decide that they will never get a better chance to go for Taiwan.”

Update: after a longer break, we've released a bugfix for the framework-scheduler component, primarily addressing issues related to the upgrade process. If you’re already using Safebox, you can access the update in the Notifications menu.

Hi everyone, we’ve been working on Safebox, an open-source framework that helps you install, manage, and access self-hosted applications such as Home Assistant, Nextcloud, and Jellyfin ect. Safebox runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows (supporting both x86 and ARM64 architectures, even Raspberry Pi, Banana Pi hardwares also tested). It manages domain and subdomain setup, Let's Encrypt certificates, DNS configuration, and reverse proxy (nginx). It also includes a WireGuard-based remote access feature and a geo-redundant backup system (currently in development). The project is in beta, and we’re looking for people interested in testing and sharing feedback. All information about Safebox and beta testing can be found in our Discord channel. Try it using Docker: docker run --rm -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock safebox/framework-scheduler

Then open: http://localhost:8080/

Links: Website: https://safebox.network/ GitHub: https://github.com/safeboxnetwork/framework-scheduler Discord: https://discord.gg/aBP8bz6N8J

We’d really appreciate any feedback or ideas for improvement.

Here is the original report by Darktrace: Salty Much: Darktrace’s view on a recent Salt Typhoon intrusion

Cybersecurity programs typically focus on protecting core applications and digital assets. But what if the bad guys start targeting trusted defensive measures?

This was the case as reported by Darktrace, a cybersecurity platform provider. Its report sheds light on a sophisticated cyber intrusion linked to Salt Typhoon. The threat actor group is believed to be operated by China's Ministry of State Security, which conducts cyber espionage campaigns against other countries.

The recent attack features a blend of zero-day exploitation and trusted software abuse. In this instance, Salt Typhoon infiltrated a European telecommunications provider through a gateway device. The attackers then executed a familiar—but evolving—arsenal of stealth techniques. These included DLL sideloading and abusing trusted antivirus software—such as Norton, Bkav, and IObit—to mask malicious payloads under legitimate binaries. The campaign also deployed a custom backdoor known as SNAPPYBEE (aka Deed RAT) by using a dual command-and-control channel (HTTP and unidentified TCP) to sustain the covert access.

Darktrace analysts attribute the incident to Salt Typhoon based on overlapping tactics, infrastructure, and malware patterns seen in prior operations by the group. The event underscores a growing trend: nation-state actors are increasingly weaponizing legitimate tools and supply-chain software to bypass traditional security controls and AI-powered detection.

...

Given the current geopolitical relationship between the US and China, attacks like this are sure to keep occurring. The two countries compete in world markets. Plus, mutual distrust exists across economic, technological, and military domains.

This campaign also symbolizes broader China-linked cyber operations targeting telecom and communications infrastructure as part of its strategic intelligence-gathering efforts.

“Organizations should expect stealthy activity that blends with normal operations when facing Salt Typhoon,” said Jason Soroko, a Senior Fellow at Sectigo, a provider of comprehensive certificate lifecycle management.”

As this attack illustrates, there has been a shift toward stealth-driven espionage. Attackers now rely less on malware volume. Their focus has turned to exploiting the trust woven into enterprise systems. The time has arrived to apply the zero-trust paradigm to cybersecurity defenses.

On her first day of work, Adau realised she had made a big mistake.

"We got our uniforms, not even knowing exactly what we were going to do. From the first day of work we were taken to the drones factory. We stepped in and we saw drones everywhere and people working. Then they took us to our different work stations."

Twenty-three-years-old and originally from South Sudan, Adau says last year she was lured to the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia, on the promise of a full-time job.

Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen will visit Berlin to address a conference next week, her office said on Wednesday, as the diplomatically isolated island pushes ahead with a new outreach to Europe.

Chinese-claimed and democratically governed Taiwan has formal diplomatic ties only with the Vatican in Europe, but countries from Britain and France to Lithuania and Poland have disregarded Beijing's complaints to allow visits by acting or former senior Taiwan officials.

...

In September, Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung made two trips to Europe, visiting countries such as Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Italy.

Speaking to reporters in Taipei earlier on Wednesday, Lin said he went to Europe to strengthen relations, adding that his ministry had set up a "Europe task force".

Tsai, a fluent English speaker who remains an influential political figure in Taiwan, has already visited other European countries since stepping down, including Britain and France.

Last year before Tsai headed to Europe on a similar visit, Taiwan's presidential office said she had Lai's full support to promote the island's relations with the continent.

Labour has been accused of ignoring Chinese influence at British universities.

Laura Trott, the shadow education secretary, wrote to Bridget Phillipson on Monday claiming that failure to tackle Beijing’s influence at universities was “part of a worrying wider pattern with this Government: when China calls, the Government heeds”.

She accused the Education Secretary of turning a blind eye to the issue after an academic was ordered to cease research about human rights abuses.

In her letter to the Education Secretary, Ms Trott said: “Chinese interference is undeniably taking place. Professors are being leant on, and vital research is being silenced. What will you do, beyond implementing the Conservatives’ Free Speech Act in full, to ensure that academic freedom is protected on our campuses?” Sheffield Hallam University was forced to apologise to one of its professors on Monday after it ordered her to halt her work on allegations of forced labour in the Xinjiang region of China.

What if you could buy off the shelf a box based on #opensource software and hardware that you could plug into your internet connection. You could connect to via Wifi and it would allow an average person to fairly easily configure, via a guided setup, a self hosted Cloud Drive, Social Media server, home automation service, VPN end point, email server and other commonly useful software?

What if that box allowed that person's friends to authenticate and to that box and link a box they own, either close by or remotely. It could extend connectivity and estabilish a chain of trus, provide a level of encrypted backup of content from that box and make assertions about the users on that box such as - This user account is owned by this person, this user account is over 18?

This is a dream. I know I'm rambling. #openwrt, #yunohost, #seflhost, #chainoftrust, #fediverse

The world-first ban prohibits anyone born after Jan. 1, 2007, from ever buying, using or smoking tobacco.

The Maldives has become the first country in the world to impose a generational smoking ban, barring anyone born after Jan. 1, 2007, from ever smoking, purchasing or using tobacco.

“The ban applies to all forms of tobacco, and retailers are required to verify age prior to sale,” the health ministry said Saturday as the ban came into effect.

The step “makes the Maldives the first country in the world to enforce a nationwide generational tobacco ban,” it added.
