Who is the other combatant in this supposed cold war ?

The Cold War was between the US and the USSR. They did not actually fight or bomb each other.

The USA, Israel, and Iran and others are actually killing people, destroying property, and destroying wealth. That is not a cold war.

The other wars weren't cold. Vietnam was not a cold war. Neither was Korea nor the first Iraq war were not cold wars.

So I'm not sure I understand the question.

edit because lazy:

i agree with these argument below about the Cold War being a proxy function of mutually assured destruction between the US and the USSR.

But I still maintain that the Cold War meant that the significant powers never faced off. So that war of coldness was because they never inter-tangled directly into hotness.

And I yield that sure the collection of proxy wars and mayhem caused by that should be cataloged as part of the Cold War. I'm not trying to minimize those wars and death and destruction.

But when people spoke of the Cold War they spoke of the US American President and the leader of the Communist Party of USSR.

Not the leaders of Vietnam and Algeria.

The cold war never ended, it just got a bit colder for a while.

Vietnam is considered part of the greater 'Cold War.' Soviet pilots flew for the North Vietnamese Air Force.

Angola's long civil war was another bloody proxy war.

There were so many wars that encompassed the greater cold war.

You mentioned some. Vietnam was the big one. There was also USSR vs Afghanistan.

But also tons of smaller wars in Africa. All over the world really. Anytime two powers went to war, the USA and USSR would each pick a side and fund it. Some of these smaller wars outlasted the cold war. One of them went from like the 1970s until 2019. I forget which one, but just watch Oversimplified's cold war videos. He covers all of them with a quick graphic showing years.

The cold war had plenty of fighting and killing. It was just done by proxy. Like in the middle east.
