we boycott them by getting them off those services, but i fear the fediverse is just not ready for primetime
The problem is that everyone is expecting a pain free transition where it's functionally 1:1. It will never be that way. Mastodon is a decent experience which had improved quite a lot (ive been using it since 2018). There's also Bluesky if people insist on having the polished corporate experience (ie. Gamification algorithms) which will inevitably be overcome by enshitification like all other corporate services.
Something has to be done though. Switch to a custom ROM on android. Ditch apple or simply don't upgrade - repair the device... If you must use AI use Mistral or something not owned by American tech oligarchs. Get off the google apps, use Linux... There are so many ways to do something. Just do what you can feaaibly do and try to get your friends and family on board as well.
Very good point. In order to break the entrenched powers it would have to be from the ground up approach. Dismantle everything or else we fall in the same rut
