That etymology tracks more closely with the réal. Real goes back to the Latin res meaning property or affairs.
Yeah, "property" as in something that can be discussed in court and the kings (or feudal lords) basically were the court as they were the ones enforcing the law. So it was a king-related (or rather feudal-lord related) affair.
