good for you, you are not the target audience. there are masses of people unlike you
it’s a social media challenge, not a personal one.
i’m happy for you, but the average person does find this challenging. if they didn’t, meta websites and apps wouldn’t be the some of the most visited websites/used apps in the world, and zuckerberg wouldn’t be rich.
i think most people just don't care. we really need to spread the message. i think getting reddit users on piefed and lemmy is a good start. (like your username btw)
i want to spread the word so bad but i was banned from reddit. never knew why and i was very curious and surprised until i found out Paul McCartney was banned for posting pictures of his concert. so now i know it could have been anything.
favebook is another matter. i may have never had an account but i love tech history. mark and the gang built tools to scrape you other account back in the day an add the data to facebook. made it easy to switch. they also made it close to impossible to do the same to facebook. but it would require something like that to get people on to something else.
ok.. soap box rant tangent time.....
i am so pissed all the governments have been stepping up this age check anti vpn anti privacy push. in my magical completely unrealistic paradise world, we would have public service annpuncents about how to self host and be a part of the solution. i am so just disenchanted with society (not sure if thats the best term). i feel like it was only two years ago where i feel the bad stuff was selling our data to advertisers. sure the nsa kept illegally spying on us but the EFF would fight them in court.
now its so much worse :(
this is how you spread the message. a challenge is a call to action, and it's popular in the sub 40 age range.
i agree - so the question is, how do we make them care?

i’ve been trying - and seemingly failing - to make people care for awhile. but i’ll do my best to keep trying.
i was banned from reddit for months… maybe close to a year? it seems pretty easy to set off their ban hammer.
i was thinking that - and apparently fedibook does allow you to import all your facebook posts :)
wafrn allows bluesky imports… i imagine with activitypub, hypothetically some stuff from threads could be imported, but i don’t know for sure.
pixelfed does allow you to import your instagram account
as for the government stuff… yeah. don’t like it.
thanks! when new sites i’m interested in pop up, i like to try to get a silly username related to the site name sometimes, although i think piefed might’ve been around for a year before my username? but i kept seeing it mentioned on reddit around the time i joined and i’d never heard of it before, so i assumed it was new (although it is still pretty new in the grand scheme of things, i think :))
Or at least OP could try posting where anyone who sees it wouldn't already be participating?
I'd be surprised if 0.1% of active users in here still use other mainstream social media.
Most people are here due to privacy concerns, even just to avoid monetization by billionaires. Using those sites/apps "sometimes" defeats the purpose.
Having any of the apps defeats the purpose, even if you don't use them. That's what OP should be pushing, for people to ensure the apps are deleted fully.
why, can't we spread the word to our friends? not like this is something only the OP should be doing
oh the so many negativity in this whole thread....
I would be surprised if that's the correct ratio, or anywhere near it. a while ago people were self professing they are also using other platforms. and how would people read about local news? Certainly not from Lemmy, as things stand today.
I doubt that. me, yes, but lots were coming who just had enough of reddit's general shitness. I have conversed with plenty people here who visibly did not care much about privacy.
and cut themselves off of the other friends who did not move. sounds a convincing strategy!
Because it's not to "friends" it's to people who already agree...
You're not changing anyone minds.
It's like deciding to protest with a "meat is murder" sign, but you do it by holding up a sign inside of a convention center for vegans who think meat should be outlawed.
If your goal is to get people to agree with you're in the exact right spot, be ause no one who disagreed would be there to see your sign.
Does that make sense?
The only way that "protest" logically makes sense is it's purely performative and only done so that people who agree with you, acknowledge that they agree with you.
It accomplished absolutely nothing, and if you want to waste your own time go for it.
But if you can't handle that critique on how to accomplish a goal with someone who agrees with you, how the fuck are you going to get someone to agree with you?
It's more likely every time you try to convert someone, you just drive them further away
You don't understand any of that?
Take a second to reflect on how many people you've ever convinced that didn't already agree with you.
I was about OP sharing it with us, and we can share it with our offline friends.
thanks for the downvote. I could have stopped reading after the quote, and avoided all the beration. you must be a nice person in real life.
good to know @givesomefucks@lemmy.world that you can't take your mistakes being pointed out. there goes the label.
