MAGA isn’t a political movement that gains or loses people’s support depending on the outcomes of its actions.

I don't think it's limited to MAGA. I don't think any GOP voter in the last 50 years has ever gotten anything from their party, and they still probably never changed their minds.

I don't think those two are comparable.

Did pre-MAGA GOP voters vote against their own economic self interest? Yes, very likely.

Did they vote for the GOP in good faith, believing this was the right choice for the country and everyone living in it? Also: Yes, very likely.

That latter aspect is important in my view. In Trump's first term, people could still argue that they didn't know what he'd do and what would happen once he got into office. But that defense is gone now. People knew exactly what would happen this time. They knew about the cruelty. They knew about the violence. They knew about the corruption, the lawlessness, the authoritarianism. And they voted for him anyway, or even because of these things. They were prepared to accept all that, as long as it would be inflicted upon "the other side" (and now the leopards are eating their faces, too). That is no longer the ill-informed, but good-faith conservatism of former GOP voters. That is the cultish fanaticism of MAGA.
