don't get me wrong I hate cars with a passion but as a frequent transit user (ab Canada), transit is still quite a beast

I've witnessed beatings, aggressive and unstable people making a ruckus ornsxene or getting on the offensive to other passengers. I don't pull out my phone on the bus in certain areas.

This isn't a problem with transit though. This is like saying the problem with shoplifting is having shops.

Violence in society is not solved by puting everyone within there own metal box. This just gives protection to all of those that can afford the metal box and makes the issue of violence worse as only the less privileged are exposed to the violence.

Also, you normalize the deaths caused by car accidents in your area. Which I can guarantee are significantly higher than anyone being randomly killed on public transit.
