Upcast Fireball.
Do they still have... I can't remember the name but in A2E it was like a compressed fireball
5E has "Delayed Blast Fireball" which has higher base damage compared to the standard "Fireball". It's higher level, and it also charges up to do more damage. It can also be upcast, so that.
Hypnotic Pattern.
Manages the enemy as well as Fireball without endagering your own party.
And if you simply want better explosions: Open a portable hole then toss a bag of holding into it. Don't even need to be a spell caster.
These are great.
Also just... Any spell that messes with gravity or makes the terrain move.
There's nothing quite like making the DM look up a bunch of roll tables because a player had just the right spell to tip the whole scenario into a nearby river.
