US govt would step in if true

[–] moustachio@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Why would they step in?

They have barely talked about stakes in AI companies to this point. It’s nothing like banking and housing market that were actually useful, and impacted people’s lives, unlike AI. LLMs are just an aggregate of stolen work that they sell back to gullible C level execs.

They shouldn't. There are a lot of arguments why they shouldn't. But there's only one argument why they might, it's the most corrupt government in the entire US history and they're very gung ho about siphoning wealth upwards. No amount of logic or reasoning will work against corruption. If the government wants to bail them out they will find a way to bail them out.

The Pentagon is militarily dependent on OpenAI now, used for targeting, aggregating intel, etc. That's a big part of the US govt hostility towards Anthropic, Anthropic won't permit used of their advanced models for war

Anthropic won't permit used of their advanced models for war

Yes they do and yes they will. They only have a couple stipulations but their models are already being used by the military.

The key difference is not for weapons/targeting/surveillance

The rest is admin

The pentagon… the agency that can’t pass an audit, despite stealing most of our tax dollars… needs LLM companies to steal more of our money to bail their big investors out, for fucking up stealing our labor/art and trying to sell it back to execs to put us out of work?

If they do try and get a bailout we def need to be armed with ARs and Plate Carriers for our protests.

Hey as a European I happily use your money and willing to pay only a cheap claude subscription 😊

But if you keep this industry and find a way to operate it on low cost, then the US wins big in the long-term.
