I fucking love the wonk of Final Fantasy VIII, that is one of the most uniquely experimental games in the series. I can understand the criticisms, but I do not agree personally, I think that game and the people who made it had more balls than anything in the series since. They didn’t half ass it, either, they got really fucking weird with the story and mechanics and leaned hard into all of it. The only game I can think to compare it to is Chrono Cross in as much as how they did almost every gameplay mechanic as different from a traditional JRPG as they could.

It was weird and experimental as fuck, but it felt like fully formed experimental weirdness, they got it all done right. It’s as much art as it is game. A lot of games that try to so something different or new feel sort of incomplete. FFVIII was allowed to fully cook.
