Say, if I walk around with one of these COVID masks on my face, would I be able to consider myself safe from these?

[–] Gunrigger@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I think a mask made entirely out of COVID is just a bad idea to wear on your face in general

Okay the pun was good, I'll give you that.

Some facial recognition tech still works even with a mask

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish?

Safe? Yeah, being recorded on a camera is perfectly safe.

Private? Depends on how connected that recording is. Face masks don't give much anonymity anymore, in fact, you tend to get noticed more while wearing them. It would not take much work for a government actor to figure out what car you got out of, what stores you went in, etc... whether you were wearing a facemask or not.

So how do we protecr against these glasses? Is there a exact wearing we can use?

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

You don't need protection from the glasses. If you're in public, you generally aren't considered to have an expectation of privacy. That's not an excuse to record people btw, but the truth is that even without smart glasses, anyone can whip out their phone, or use a hidden camera to record you.

What you need protection from, is surveillance networks easily and convertly accessing aggregated data from a large swath of publicly and privately owned cameras. The only protection from that is laws
