I highly doubt that. I haven't seen it yet but Nolan uses vfx in all his films. As he should, people who think "CGI always sucks" never know how much CGI is used that they don't see.
That’s just the usual lie they peddle to get people like your brother to spread. It’s got CGI all over the place.
People, including the directors etc, claimed that vecna in stranger things was “100% practical, no cgi”. They claimed that there was no cgi in top gun maverick. The truth? Yeah they filmed practical things, but then replaced literally the entire things with cgi.
And yet, $250 million budget for practical effects. Could have saved money on CGI, which is a bonkers thing to say.
Unless the movie is Star Wars or Avengers: Endgame or Avatar, nobody should be spending a quarter of a billion dollars on a movie. Dune 2's budget was $190 million, for a sci-fi epic, with a proven audience. This is just a fantasy story.
Making the budget on debut is incredible lucky, but it might still be considered a "flop" because of the extra $200M or whatever of marketing budget.
Christopher Nolan is his own brand that has a proven audience. In a sense, Universal paid handsomely to poach him from Warner Brothers, and giving him big budgets is part of that deal.
And he has yet to disappoint or not make money so it's working fine. It already made over $260 million globally and the weekend isn't even over yet. It will absolutely still be the biggest movie to see for the next several weeks so it did it's job. Sometimes I feel like there isn't one thing on Lemmy that people can't find something to complain about! I can't wait to see it still, but there were no good seats at any theater near me when i finally decided to go. Next weekend it is!

The whole internet is full of contrarians. I don't know why so many movie-goers are so determined not to enjoy anything
There's an xkcd pointing out that it's a lot easier to hate something everyone else likes, than to love something everyone else hates, and that honestly really changed the way I view popularity and contrarianism. I respect contrarians who can love what is hated but I'm totally dismissive of anyone trying to criticize what is popular.
I think this is a good time to say that I really enjoyed Mercy. I don't get what people's problem with it was. I think it's a cool writing challenge to tell a story with the limits of a character having to investigate the crime from a computer with a time limit and I think the movie did a good job telling a story with those limits. I thought it was exciting to watch. And, since I turn my phone off in the theatre and can't check the time, I liked that the movie periodically tells you roughly how much time is left. I also love that we are watching the story unfold in real time, with no time skips.
I will say though that the villain's motivation was kind of dumb. He could have just brought forward the evidence of his brother's innocence and discredited the AI judge. If the court wouldn't hear it, he could have made it public. It was completely unnecessary to frame another innocent man for murder
Anytime I look up a forum thread of a movie I'm watching/wanting to watch (spoiler-free), at least half of the comments are "this movie was trash and you should feel bad for liking it."
And the other half feel the need to justify why they liked it to the half that hated it for reasons they literally can't put into words (if they do it's always the most contrived/overused excuse in critiquing).
Doesn't Disney spend that on most of their movies.
I still don't really know what you're trying to say. Did you mean to type "special effects" instead of "practical" at the beginning of your comment?
Practical effects are more expensive than computer generated, both are special effects.
