The issue is we rightfully trust Valve to always provide what we paid for. We don't expect Sony to care that you bought and paid for something and provide the game 5 years from now.
It's very cool that I still have my ps2 games from high school on disk that work fine. If I bought them from Valve, I'd still have them too. Right now PS3 games can still be downloaded from the store on a PS3, but I doubt that will be the case in a few more years.
