Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

They're having a conversation, he's working. The caption is dumb.

    [–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

"I hope we can get into the club."

"Yeah, it's going to be packed already, and we're still 20 minutes away."

"Since it's this late already, see if Chris's after-party's started yet."

"Good idea... ... The stream is up. Only a few people milling around so far."

    "Soon to be three more."

"Yeah, skipping club, on to the after party."

That reads like how a 6th grader thinks adulting works.

    [–] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 18 hours ago

The joke is that he wouldn't be talking to them even if he weren't doing whatever he's doing. So yes, the caption is dumb, on purpose, in order to be humorous. I hope the joke is better now I've explained it.

Yeah, he's not joining the conversation because he's working on some open source code. Thats what it says.

    [–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He’s not joining the conversation because they’re strangers who just happen to be riding the same public transit as him.

    [–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Indeed, and he could join in the conversation and have a very nice conversation and make friends. But he is not doing that because he is working. It is not likely that he would join the conversation if he wasn't working, as such the joke does not make much sense, but it is definitely something he could do, which could indeed be a nice conversation for the three of them, or it could be terrible for some of them.

I don't see why you put it down so black and white. Is it prohibited to start a conversation with strangers on public transport? How do you meet people? I often talk to strangers, it's generally pretty nice.

Granted, the last few years I didn't take public transport very often: I mostly walk, but when I do I generally start a chat with someone.

Let me guess... You're not from USA?

    [–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 2 points 11 hours ago

You are correct. I have met plenty nice people in the US though, I had pretty good chats.

But I reckon buses were pretty strange: often people would start screaming stuff while not talking to anyone and keep going for the whole ride.

I'm pretty sure he is debating with someone on github PR/issue thread

    [–] db2@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, it says he's saying something to them. It's right there.

If you can very easily explain a 'joke' with an incredibly common, mundane explanation...

You probably do not have a very good joke.

    [–] Amdouni@lemmy.ml -1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Gosh, just laugh or give it a ↓ if you don't like it

    [–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

    No.

I have thoughts, and want to talk about them.

That's the point of a discussion platform.

Who are you to tell me I just shouldn't say anything?

Pretending things that either aren't jokes, or are really dumb jokes... are actually good jokes... is how you get more dumb jokes, and people laughing at things that are not jokes.
