EDIT: I have since turned on LibRedirect to view any R*ddit content.
They're trying to protect their precious data that they already sold to AI firms? That's shutting the barn door after the horses have bolted.
And it doesn't make any sense. Bots can easily change where they're scraping... only blocking "old" still allows it thru "new".
Sure it slows down any old bots, but its programming 101 to scrape sites. Or, like... people will just make an account to scrape?? Especially """"ai"""" bros, they can just spin up whatever to proxy through and get around whatever bs they throw up.
Just the laziest lying I've ever seen.
This Trumpian era is so weird. People and companies follow Trump's lead. They say the most ridiculous lies and then double down. Nothing matters.
Making an account requires a fresh email address and a captcha solve and now you've turned this from 101 into something requiring more effort. It can't be bulletproof, but getting rid of the lowest hanging fruit makes the rest of it more manageable for site operators.
That said, reddits explanation is still disingenuous.
