This is good because it drives people away from Reddit

[–] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 49 points 3 weeks ago

It definitely drove me away. And I've never had an account there.

[–] insurgentrat@hexbear.net 36 points 3 weeks ago

Fucking finally reddit is curing my insomnia driven browsing of bestofredditorupdates.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 35 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Very annoying, there's a lot of tech support stuff on reddit that I now can't access without logging in. Guess I'll need to make a burner for work.

[–] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

No need for a burner reddit account. If your job allows you to install the Firefox browser, you can install libRedirect on your own. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How long is that going to work when everything needs an account on reddit?

[–] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

libRedirect redirects to a privacy frontend like Redlib which scrapes from Reddit, allowing you to anonymously browse it.

EDIT: it'll work as long as reddit doesn't get like youtube, with its war against privacy frontends.

Yes. and I just added an extra to my own. So read that answer.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

What else do you think this is about lol

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I have libredirect, but none of the instances seem to support old.reddit.com.

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

WDYM? The instances have their own frontend, they just source the content from Reddit

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah I realize I was completely wrong about how they work, my bad. What I suppose I mean is that all the instances I tried either looked too much like the new layout (I think they might've all been redlib) or were just dead. Are there any that look more like the old interface?

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

ah, well that IDK. Sorry

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 24 points 3 weeks ago

I'm deeply in love with mainstream enshittification, it's radicalizing people against corporationism and bringing attention to FOSS solutions.

Remember when it was a badge of honor to work for FAANG, MAAMA, whatever you call it?

We're obviously living in a geeky bubble here on lemmy, but I feel like people in general are growing super skeptical when it comes to their attitude towards american corporations.

the most real place on the internet

If one means real-ly badly infested with Langley bots.

[–] Commie_Chameleon@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wonder if they'll ever remember to force my old ass account to connect an email to it. Wouldn't mind because it would actually make me leave lol

[–] boboblaw@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

they may just ban you for vague security reasons and ask you to confirm your nonexistent email

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

we have suspended your account for suspicious activity (not having a verified email on file).

Reddit may soon require login for browsing, citing anti-scraping efforts, potentially ending anonymous guest access entirely.

They're trying to protect their precious data that they already sold to AI firms? That's shutting the barn door after the horses have bolted.

[–] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

And it doesn't make any sense. Bots can easily change where they're scraping... only blocking "old" still allows it thru "new".

Sure it slows down any old bots, but its programming 101 to scrape sites. Or, like... people will just make an account to scrape?? Especially """"ai"""" bros, they can just spin up whatever to proxy through and get around whatever bs they throw up.

Just the laziest lying I've ever seen.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Just the laziest lying I've ever seen.

This Trumpian era is so weird. People and companies follow Trump's lead. They say the most ridiculous lies and then double down. Nothing matters.

[–] alexandra_kollontai@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

Or, like... people will just make an account to scrape??

Making an account requires a fresh email address and a captcha solve and now you've turned this from 101 into something requiring more effort. It can't be bulletproof, but getting rid of the lowest hanging fruit makes the rest of it more manageable for site operators.

That said, reddits explanation is still disingenuous.

[–] Aradino@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Seconding libRedirect. Its very easy to set up and typically seamless. It also supports other sites like redirecting X to XCancel.

Must have browser addon

[–] o_d@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

I've been using LibRedirect for while and Redlib is the one service that I can pretty much always find a working mirror. I also prefer the Redlib interface over both the old and new official one.

I can still access old.reddit.com?

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 30 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Think they're still doing AB testing.

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

Makes sense, that's really annoying that they're doing that tho.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

I think so too, I can still lurk on old.reddit.com. My city has a surprisingly good subreddit that I lurk on to keep up on local events and news, and I don't need to login yet. I'll probably just abandon reddit once and for all if/when the forced login affects me.

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

I noticed it forces to log in when using my old Samsung A52, but not on my new flagship phone, which makes me wonder if there's classism involved.

[–] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Nope. Not without signing in.

EDIT: ~~or not without using something like LibRedirect~~: https://github.com/libredirect/browser_extension & https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/

EDIT 2: forget what I said about using libRedirect with old.reddit as you wouldn't need to access old.reddit using a privacy frontend. You just get reddit.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Had it blocked yesterday for the first time.

Same here, we must simply be built different

[–] poster596@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I've been getting this:

you have been blocked by network security + reddit teletubbie in a fedora

For some reason F5 doesn't work, but closing the tab and reopening it with ctrl+shift+T gets around it in firefox.

[–] alexandra_kollontai@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

How did they manage to draw this smug fucker as the perfect representation of the median redditor

I just go to reddit.com and then old.reddit works from there

[–] BuhbyeLittleGumshoe@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

I have been blocked by the grand teletubbie

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Use old.reddit.com. Or better yet, don't use reddit at all.

They also demand to install their shitty app. I don't get why I need an app to browse a basic website, I have a perfectly functional web browser right fucking here!

Edit: oh shit, is old.reddit.com dead? Not visiting reddit anymore lol

[–] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

They are killing old.reddit. it hasn't worked for me for about three weeks. This is stage 2.

[–] beanenjoyer@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Use redlib.catsarch.com if you need to access reddit. It still works.

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Interesting they would do this. I’d noticed Reddit becoming somewhat mainstream over the last year with people mentioning it as a source of information for niche things and I know they just browsed without making an account. Guess that’ll come to an end.

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 22 points 3 weeks ago

Reddit's been extremely mainstream for like a decade now

[–] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

reddit has been like top 5 most visited sites in the US for over 10 years
