I've had games with native Linux versions on Steam break more times than games I play through Proton
With Proton it's usually temporary, and is fixed with a new release. When native Linux games break it has been permanently, because the developers stop maintaining it. Though it might be worth mentioning that I mostly play multiplayer and I consider a game "broken" if I no longer can play together with my friends who use Windows
