A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If you pay 1% for one house, someone with 2 houses should pay 2%, and a company with 2000 homes should pay 2000%

That would make it increasingly difficult for mega companies to buy up everything and torture the housing market

Or just ban mega corps from buying housing stock. It's not difficult to enforce.

That being said, at least where I'm from, the biggest cause for expensive housing was bad zoning laws + suddenly increased demand due to immigration.

The government laxed zoning laws while (seemingly) temporarily reducing immigration. This has caused housing prices to drop quite a lot

  • suddenly increased demand due to immigration.

You mean investors. Rich foreigners are called investors. Poor foreigners are called immigrants.
Get with the program.

No, I don't mean investors. Investors are too less for the amount of increase in housing costs.

In the period from the pandemic to 2025, the rise in immigration (note, the RISE in immigration , not immigration itself) accounted to about an 11% increase in the median house prices and rents (IRCC, 2025)

While other issues do exist, the biggest issue by far in terms of housing stock is the zoning laws that make the supply of new housing stock very very difficult. The increase in immigration simply showed how the market was failing to address this increased demand due to these laws.

I blame greed, not immigrants, but i see your point.

When the mega corps own the legislature and the courts it's pretty difficult, when they own the executive branch then they de-facto will not have anything enforced upon them.

Legitimate problem that isn't thaaat bad in my country. In Canada, corporate donations to election campaigns are either banned outright or severely restricted (different federal/provincial rules). But yes, corpos still exercise control through ownership over the media to influence campaigns. That being said, saying that they own the legislatures is a stretch.

In the US it doesn't seem to be a stretch at all. 50/50 dead heat races most places, and the big money backs both sides. No wonder that nothing changes for the big corps when "the other side" gets control.

Guillotine time!

What’s a mega corp? Lots of billionaires don’t have all their money in one big company, they spread it out over many small companies. They have friends and family members and trusts to spread the ownership around.
