That's literally not the joke though. The joke doesn't change at all if we correct the date to 1985, so clearly the error not only isn't the joke, it's not even a part of the joke. How is this so upvoted? People just slackjawed reacting like "omfg I remember the Simpsons!"
I think it is an important part of the joke, because it reinforces that no other types of games exist in this guys mind
That makes no sense. You could literally remove the dates entirely and that point would still be made just by Mario -> Last of Us. Having the incorrect date for Mario doesn't reinforce that point in any way.

That's fine, you can enjoy the silliness of an error or fun addition to the joke. But that's still not "the joke" being made, which is my point.
It's definitely not the joke, but you can't know that it wasn't an intentional part of the joke being made
