How does that work? Do you just have to throw a sicky and use your sick pay if you want to go on holiday?

Assuming you get any or have any left, yeah. That or you can take unpaid time off. Though some places frown on that as well.

Someone else explained that PTO is combined paid company sick days and holiday allowance. I assumed it was just the US term for holiday allowance.

Some places do have it split out, so pto and sick days are seperate, just really heavily depends on the company because there aren’t any regulations about it.
