Yeah, just like you can run your own SMTP service and exchange e-mail, or... could 25 years ago before the big players froze all the small players out of the big network pool. You can set up your own internet, your own e-mail network, etc. but the Facebooks, Whats Apps, Apples and Googles of the world will lock your internet out of their internet.
But that's a good thing and the whole point? You can use the big tech internet and all their services, or you can use the non big tech internet and not use their services.
