I guess for the same reason kids use random sticks they find on the ground like walking sticks even though they have working legs. "coz they feel like doing it". Not every action needs a productive purpose. Some people wear sunglasses or hats indoors.
I know a guy who weighs that much. Uses a scooter 99% of the time, uses his canes on the rare occasion he has to stand
