steam deck does not need it desperately. the games that it can run on it fit quite well on the 512gb and 1tb model, and you can have a regular microsd card for older games/indies. if you only went for the 256gb model, it's likely you only bought the thing for indie games anyway
i have a 512gb microsdxc card on a 1tb model steam deck, i have a lot of bigger games on the ssd and like dozens of smaller games on the microsdxc with essentially 0 performance difference on those smaller games
nintendo switch 2 has a microsd express card reader because they cheaped out on the internal storage while having requirements for fast storage in many games, and want to offload the cost of storage to the customer
the steam machine would benefit from a microsd express reader i guess, but only one with backwards compatibility, as those cards are ridiculously expensive and i'm sure a lot of people would want to go for a microsdxc card instead, peoples' needs and use cases are different. i'm not sure if backwards compatible ones even exist though, i'm pretty sure nintendo switch 2 for example only accepts microsd express cards.
