Never make assumptions

Also, OOP not being their mother means the doctor is limited in what they can discuss
Yep one time we were in a hospital and the nurse walked in and said wow 4 generations of a family all in one room. Yeah she thought my aunt was my grandma. That was a fun one to explain
But my personal favorite hospital assumption was when my great aunt was recovering. At the time they thought she wasn't going to make it and brought in a priest. She has a stereotypical Hispanic last name, her kids are all half-cuban, and they all grew up in Miami. They bring in a priest (catholic) and he begins doing his thing all in Spanish. Eventually someone finally leans in to tell him she does not speak Spanish. 80% of the room spoke Spanish, but not her. She married a Cuban, but was not at all Hispanic herself. Needless to say the priest was embarrassed
