This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.
We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.
3. No excessive self-promotion
Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.
This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.
4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts
This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.
We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.
5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW
Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.
No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.
6. No linking to piracy
Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.
We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

OoT is a top 5 overrated game for sure. It's a good game and I have to respect its impact on the medium but it's status atop so many "best games of all time" lists is pure nostalgia.
I accept that if you weren't there for it, you may never appreciate it to its full extent and might easily see it as overrated.
That said, the experience of playing Ocarina of Time in 1998 will likely never be topped, simply because we will never again see a leap as massive as the transition from 2D to 3D. Not only did they invent most of the mechanics still used today, but they somehow got the atmosphere and sense of adventure damn near perfect on their first try.
Thinking you had beaten the game after collecting the three Spiritual Stones, only to pull the Master Sword, wake up seven years in a ruined future, and realise the real journey was just starting, was mind-blowing.
Throw in time travel, the Sheik reveal, the perfect musical score alongside a blend of quirky and creepy encounters, and the game achieved levels of mystery not seen before and rarely replicated since.
Combine all of that with a pre-internet culture where every secret had to be discovered and shared by word of mouth, and it conjured a sense of magic that I don't think will ever be reproduced... Admittedly they came close with the "you can go anywhere" aspect of Breath of the Wild.

is exactly what I'm talking about. It's the reason so many people like FF7 so much. They're good games on their own merit and historically significant but that feeling is attached to the cultural context of when they came out. It's not a trait of the game itself.
It's also kinda like how everyone's favorite Pokemon game is the first one they played. It creates the baseline all others are compared against but set in an emotional foundation that later experiences cannot match. I'm not even going to claim I'm immune to this. Hell I put "Brave Fencer Musashi" on my top 5 and I stand by it, fully aware that it isn't as magical for other people but I replay it every couple of years. I'm just saying it's overrated in the modern context.
So you had an N64 and played it when it came out? Even if so, you were 7, slightly too young to really grasp the massive technical leap it represented for the entire industry at the time.
You questioned why so many consider it the best game of all time. The debate isn't about which games have the most modern quality-of-life features today, or what I'd take to a desert island. When talking about the "greatest of all time", cultural impact, timing, and legacy can't be ignored.
Newton discovered the laws of gravity. We don't diminish his monumental achievements just because physics evolved and his formulas are now taught at a high school level.
Also, my favourite Pokémon game wasn't the first one I played as each one was an iterative improvement rather than a groundbreaking novel experience which wasn't matched for years.
I could possibly agree with your statement "overrated in a modern context" (I'd personally put every single Final Fantasy on that list), but that's not what the "best of all time" lists are measuring.
