Every single one of those websites is not crucial to existence even remotely. Let’s all collectively show them they don’t matter anymore.
Good luck getting the kids off of Roblox. They would literally kill someone for robux.
The problem is that most people don't care about digital privacy and wouldn't think twice when asked to scan their face to access an app or website.
I remember reading about a teen who gave a random website her social security number to get 75% off. She was confused why it was such a big deal. She saved $500!
"They already have all my data anyway"
The same people when I was trying to warn them in like 2012 - "They don't want my data, I'm not that interesting"
It’s true. There’s a whole chunk of mainstream users that won’t think twice about it. I don’t blame them though. Most people aren’t educated on the negatives and our government and tech oligarchs aren’t about to teach them. I work in tech and am terminally online, so I’m acutely aware of this stuff.
Even people who are don't seam to care. One of my local revolutionary socialist org's still uses WhatsApp for there general communication. I think it takes a special kind of nerdyness and neurodivergence.
Not only are they not necessary, they're actually harmful to existence. Admittedly I use YouTube somewhat through privacy front ends, but quitting all the others has been great for my health. Using nebula has also minimised my use of YouTube.
YouTube is the only one left for me as well and I’ve been considering Nebula myself. One thing I do try to avoid though is all of the rage bait stuff. I actively filter it out and focus only on videos that teach me things. So a lot of science, food, carpentry, and other crafty kind of channels and videos. Oh, and a lot of animal ones.
I love nebula for a lot of the topics you listed, highly recommend it!
Why would you pay for a YouTube replacement with far less content? Just use an ad-blocker, sponsor blocker or a private frontend. Maybe even torrent-tube if your into that kind of thing.
Any free alternatives for YouTube?
YouTube is problematic because it isn't really the platform that is valuable, it is the content creators.
A more appropriate alternative to it is GrayJay app, which tries to remove YouTube monopoly by supporting multiple platforms. If enough people would use that, content creators could really migrate from one platform to another.
Grayjay is a nice front end that doesn’t require sign in.
Peertube is probably the closest. I don't really use either, but I've understood that peertube is a bit lacking in content.
As you're here on lemmy.ml, I doubt it, but if you happen to be a "cryptocurrency enthusiast", then odysee might also be an option, though I'm not sure hiw much of it is open-source.
odyssey (keep in mind, no 1-1 alternative for youtube exists, yet)
If longform video is your thing, I would highly suggest Nebula. I've paid £27.30 for a years subscription. Creators say they get paid fairly and can make content without censorship. It has been exactly what I'm into.
