Hard to call it an ai company when it doesn't make ai models, proton is no more an ai company then the many companies adding ai to their website as an assistant
Proton are an ai company because they have their own ai, they also have the most ridiculous brand fans.
They don't have their own ai, they have an ai frontend which runs preexisting open weight ai models.
Proton does have a lot of fans probably because they are the most well known 'privacy' company and a lot of people set and forget without reading into them.
They don't make it:

Per discussions online, it seems to be a mix of small Mistral and Olmo models, and GLM for the max tier.
This'd be like arguing a company hosting database software to serve a product is a "database software company." They are a hosting some tool made by someone else, with a sticker.
Perhaps. I'm a bit scared of how much critical mass they have, TBH. But this does not make them an AI company.

"Meet Lumo, the zero-access encrypted AI assistant by Proton"
I had a 2 year subscription with proton, I walked away from it with more than a year remaining. The ai and the right wing thing is just the tip of the iceberg, but I don't live to supply links and proof to proton fanboys (which is how this always goes), so all I suggest is that people pay attention to protons social media (reddit in particular) for a while before giving them your money and trusting them with your details, emails etc. If people cannot be bothered putting some effort into their choices, so be it, not my problem.
