The communist regimes were all set upon to the point where authoritarians took over, and never gave it up. It's not a rebuke of communism that cuba wasn't a utopia, with the US on it's ass.
That said, I think a mixed socialism capitalism society could work best, but with strict 1950 style controls, taxing the rich 90% on obscene profits and all that. Enforcing anti trust laws, and so forth. Not doing those is not capitalism, it's crony capitalism/oligarchy.
