In an instant, Elmo realized he wasn't seeing the angel fall, the angel was quite stationary. He was seeing his own rapid ascent. He realized far too late that it wasn't the halo holding the angel up, but the angel holding the halo down.
The mortal cosmos blurred to a speck below his feet as Elmo contemplated his grip on the glowing golden disc. "Should Elmo let go"? he wondered aloud as starlight faded from memory. He knew he was being borne aloft, but couldn't tell by what. The holy ring still clutched in his fingers applied no apparent force to his body in any direction, and in fact felt fixed in place like reality's own anchor. At once it was searing cold and freezing hot. Time raced ahead as the light receded behind.
As the countless brief eternities blurred past, Elmo's existence faded to angelic incandescence only interrupted by the impudence of a red shag wrist. Once he tried to look away, but found no other direction in which to gaze. There was nothing else for him. Only the interrupted golden light.
