Spiritually, season 2 is peak Trek.

Season 3 is nostalgiafest that makes little sense given the end of season 2...

Mild Star Trek Picard spoilers

You and I may be the only people who enjoyed season 2 of Picard. It was a weird one off episode, but for a whole season. It was like taking the Picard Flute episode, cranking up the weirdness, and just keeping on for an entire season.

I think for a finale season 3 is great. After the first two seasons it was clear they didn't really have any ideas, so getting the gang back together for "one last mission" plus all the other 90s Trek references, it was a good call.

A lot of people don't realise that Trek works best when it's capital Weird. "oh we found yet another humanoid species that built a culture on one very specific contended aspect of human nature, let our heroes resolve it" are dime a dozen.

Then you have Masks, or PIC S2, which are cheesy, a bit all over the place, very much Alice in the looking glass episodes... and they bring out some of the best acting, the most enjoyable lore, and so on.
