Yes that is true. I did not make that distinction. Lemmy.ml isn't a bad place. But if someone says "capitalism is a good system" or even soemthing like "I like the idea of communism, but not how its implemented" and gets downvoted into oblivion, it discourages them to speak their mind. Eventually you'll get segregated communities with only one kind of opinion, an echo chamber.
That isn't bad perse. If you want to make memes with only likeminded people, or if you want to have in-depth discussions about the things you like, that's a good thing. That's the power of the fediverse. The problem is that by all intents and purposes, lemmy.ml is the default instance for people that want to join lemmy. So that "segregated community" with the specific ideologies and the downvotes will be their first impression of lemmy.
I really don't think this is true. When I google "Lemmy" or "Lemmy signup" I only get join-lemmy.org. When you press "Join a Server", it asks you about language and interests only. By default, it will give a random sorting, instead of the "most active" option. To be fair, the "most active" option gives you .ml as a first result if you previously selected all topics, general, politics or technology as interests, but this whole situation doesn't seem like .ml is the instance most new users will automatically flock to.
Hmm, it does seem that way. It's been a while since I joined. Maybe I'm just an old man yelling at clouds.
Fair enough, sometimes things change without us realizing. Good on you for taking it on the chin.
