Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1501 readers
55 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Archive link in the URL, in case it doesn't work: https://archive.is/EhGyF

The link should speak for itself, it felt already a bit on the limit of personal attack, but here's what made me remove it

I'm all for debating the validity or not to consolidate communities, generally it's a case-by-case discussion.

I gave more reasons in the thread, but basically it's to ensure that communities stay active enough rather than all fade and die each on their own.

I'm also open to unpin that pinned post if it's considered controversial.

If you want to discuss any of those points, you can open a thread on !fedigrow@lemmy.zip .

But arguing in bad faith when already targeting me with a meme, it's no.

Note that the meme was also reported by someone else as a personal attack, thank you to that person.

I just added an additional rule to the community sidebar

Memes should not be personal attacks towards other users

Sanctions:

  • removed the post
  • 7 days ban

Edit: copy pasting a comment I made there

Let's have a look at my regular activity

At the same time, I still regularly help new Lemmy.world users:

I will repeat, 95% of the active communities are currently on Lemmy.world: https://piefed.zip/communities?search=&home_select=any&subscribe_select=any&topic_id=0&feed_id=0&language_id=0&instance=&sort_by=active_weekly+desc

It feels ironic to be called out about "not wanting to spread out" when I'm actively trying to spread the communities

I would remove the ban (actually technically I would change it to a 1- rather than 7-day one, at which point it is already time served), keep the post as removed, and not add a new rule as the first one that indicates for people to be respectful already covers this.

Typically a "personal attack" goes against someone's character rather than their position, but even if it was accidental to use a blue rather than yellow sonic it still is understandable to have it removed as being so close to a line there that reasonable people could disagree, at which point a mod acts as the breaker of that tie.

Which then is unfortunate since the topic could really have used discussing it would seem - e.g. you listed out your position there, which both OP and others could have read, except that now the post is only visible in this archive but no longer on Lemmy.

And otherwise they do make some very valid points: in some cases (especially with consent of the entire community, unlike e.g. the infamous and unsuccessful 196 migration; edit: to anyone here wondering "which one", then my answer is "yes") it really does make sense to consolidate communities, yet also it can make sense to not do so as well (again the 196 situation is a great guide there: if the mods want to move then go ahead then, but that does not mean that the community members will necessarily decide to follow - community members should not be treated like property!!! what are we talking about here, landed gentry!?). So there is no "one size fits all" solution that will work for everyone there, each situation must be decided on a case-by-case basis and sometimes it's okay to move but sometimes it's okay to not move too.

Perhaps you can invite the OP to resubmit their post without the meme being directed in such a pointed manner at any one person in the Fediverse community? Ironically having to resubmit their points and make new comments all over again may give them some direct and personal experience in why you are arguing for consolidation:-).

Seems like that person blocked dbzer0 from the archive link, so that will probably be the end of it
