The vegetarian part is irrelevant he could have choked on a vegetarian meal just as easily. The real claim here is that they could have diverted the plane but chose not to.

I think eating something with dislike and fear of finding a piece of meat in your bite might get you to chew more reluctantly and choke more easily. I remember that feeling of almost choking on my food when my parents forced me to eat stuff I didn't want.
