I live here and wouldn't be surprised by it. I live in a large coastal town and grew up in a small inland town in the west country.

Well, I've said A so I should say B. Here it is: the UK feels, from Russian perspective, a more "normal" country than USA or Commonwealth nations.

The UK is a commonwealth nation though, and there is a huge amount of variation among those countries
