I just thought it'd be hilarious if a dev named their game, like, "Warhound 2" or something when there was never an original "Warhound" lol (and like, do so seriously, not just as a parody or joke, at least primarily so).

Goonies 2 on NES, the original Goonies was Famicom only and never made its way to the NES console.

Not a game but there's an Spanish movie called "Vivancos 3: if you like it we'll do the first two". It was a flop so...

[–] Sina@beehaw.org 2 points 8 hours ago

Vivancos 3

The imdb rating of 3.9 for a movie that is not porn is quite incredible, I'm almost tempted to watch it.

Dune 2 came out shortly after a completely unrelated Dune game by a different studio, with the 2 added just so people could distinguish them.

If we're including n64 style naming convention, Corn Kidz 64. Pretty sure the name got it's name from the fact it looks and controls like an n64 title. Otherwise, no idea since the obvious, IMO, TF2 was already mentioned.

Does BattleBit Remastered count? There was never a released game called BattleBit, and it was named that as a joke by the devs, because of how many times they had to redo things.

[–] Prathas@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

Oh yeah, that's true!!! I never played it but saw gameplay and do know of it!

lol, touché...

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 19 hours ago

For a long time, I thought Street Fighter 2 was one such game.

There is no "Street Fighter" home console release. It was arcade only, and wasn't even popular outside of Japan.

DOTA 2. The original DOTA is a custom map for Warcraft 3 (Defense of the Ancients).

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 3 points 11 hours ago

TIL what DOTA stands for

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 4 points 17 hours ago

Episode 63 of Welcome to Nightvale is called There Is No Part 1: Part 2.
It's a podcast, but it does fit your requirement more precisely than perhaps any videogame.

Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. There is no 1 or 2. However, it only exists as a virtual arcade cabinet in DOOM 3.

Edit: Apparently you can also find it as a secret in DOOM (2016).

[–] Prathas@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

Interesting. I've never heard of it.

[–] megopie@beehaw.org 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I mean, team fortress two was the first game in the series. Team fortress “1” having been a mod for a different game.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Team Fortress Classic was the first stand alone game in the series, sold as its own thing if we're not gonna count the original Quake mod.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 4 points 18 hours ago

Same with DOTA

[–] Transparent_knoll@awful.systems 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Goat simulator 3 exists, despite there being no Goat simulator 2.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 6 points 1 day ago

This is what came to mind for me too.

It is so much fun to play co-op with my kid. Then I can act old and describe all the gaming industry references that only I get.

I've also been to Sweden two whole times, so I get to act all sophisticated and worldly while describing the real world Goatenburg.

[–] OmnipotentEntity@beehaw.org 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Quest 64 exists despite Quest 63, Quest 62, ... Quest not existing.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 19 hours ago

This is half the N64's library, and the console itself!

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago

Reminded me of ClayFighter 63⅓

[–] FUCKING_CUNO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not a game, but the movie 'Troll 2', the worst rated movie on IMDB, was named such without an original with the hopes to give it more "legitimacy"

Threes! Pretty sure there is no Ones! or Twos! preceding it...

[–] Prathas@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

*Sigh* You guys... and ironically, I have played that game but forgot about it lol.

[–] savvywolf@pawb.social 2 points 20 hours ago

There was an old Flash game called Pandemic 2. Iirc, there wasn't a Pandemic 1, which struck me as odd.

[–] trinsec@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There never was a Leisure Suit Larry 4. That number got skipped.

[–] jay2@beehaw.org 5 points 23 hours ago

Al Lowe had originally planned to make part 4 as a massive multiplayer online game, but there were too many technical complications. Additionally, Al had writers block. So he skipped to part 5 saying it additionally afforded him a new start to get out from his writers block. He was supposed to get back to it one day, but never did.

I own all of the others. Part 3 (Passionate Patti In Pursuit Of The Pulsating Pectorals) is the best and the original Part 1 is runner up. All I ever wanted was a Part 4 though.

It's Al's 80th birthday in 13 days (July 24, 1946). Maybe he'll get us something

[–] Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zone 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pardon the all caps, the games name is in all caps and is a 3 not 2

BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER 3: I OPENED A PORTAL TO HELL IN THE FAVELA TRYING TO REVIVE MIT AIA I NEED TO CLOSE IT

This is the game that came to my mind too but apparently 1 and 2 are available on itch.io

[–] Kissaki@beehaw.org 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

I sought out the product pages on itch.io and Steam:

[–] Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Ohhhh. I had no idea. I assumed it was just for the bit. I just picked up 3, so I guess I’ll need to go play the first two before I dive into it.

[–] Infrapink@thebrainbin.org 11 points 1 day ago

Atari released Sprint 2 in arcades in 1976. It was followed by Sprint 4 and Sprint 8 in 1977, and then Sprint One in 1978.

In this case, the numbers refer to the number of concurrent players, not the order of release.

[–] HetareKing@piefed.social 17 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Not quite the same, but there is a game called Zwei!! (German for two). Its sequel is just called Zwei II, though.

[–] Prathas@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Oh, I've played Zwei II: The Ilvard Insurrection. Its music is absolutely fantastic. The game is called "Zwei!!" because the gameplay has you constantly toggle between two protagonists with markedly different fighting styles, entirely referencing the gameplay with no intention to "skip" "Ein." I couldn't tolerate the first one, but give the second a go sometime if you ever come across a copy! The band jbl behind Falcom is truly incredible; you can hear the main theme manifest repeatedly in so many diverse, cool ways throughout the soundtrack.

power punch II!

it was a mediocre fighting game for the nes. it’s original title was mike tyson’s intergalactic power punch, but after the aforementioned mike tyson was arrested for sexual assault, it was renamed power punch II despite power punch 1 never existing.

the rumor goes that it was originally pitched to nintendo as a sequel to punch-out, but either because it was kinda crap or because of mike tyson’s arrest, it was rejected. but this is debated.

[–] Prathas@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago

Wow, I had no idea of this. Good stuff!

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

I can't think of any but plenty of 2's had a previous game that most people had not heard of and never played while number 2 was a huge success. street fighter comes to mind.

[–] missingno@fedia.io 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. The name is a takeoff on Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but there were no other Puzzle Fighter versions.

There was a PS2 game called Anubis II, but no Anubis I. Though it was technically a sequel...to Ninjabread Man.

The Gorky series started with Gorky 17, followed by Gorky 0, and then finally Gorky 02.

The Clock Tower series kind of did this in reverse. The original was Japan-only, so when Clock Tower 2 was localized they dropped the number. And the same with King's Field.
