i recently watched a video of a youtuber named the sunshine feeler where he talks about the mega drive in japan and he said he feels altered beast's concept is underutilized and it made me think about how magician lord takes the same concept and make it for me a more enjoyable experience what do you think about this comperasion?

To be honest, I’ve never heard of magician lord. I will check it out. Thanks.

I loved Altered Beast in the arcade, I also never played Magician Lord and will have to look into it. A similar game I think is Sword of Sodan, that my brother barely let me play on his Amiga, which was pretty cool too.. lol

Playing Altered Beast in the arcade and seeing the first boss tear his head off is the entire reason I got a Genesis

As a fan of both Sega as well as SNK and having owned both the Mega Drive and the NeoGeo CD and still playing both to this day (various methods, mostly MiSTer now):

Aside from Altered Beast having a two player mode it's not really a contest. Magician lord is a far more fleshed out experience and has a lot of variance in its gameplay while Altered Beast always features one screen high levels and gets old really fast.

They're neither of them especially great games, although of the two I'd say Magician Lord plays better, just by virtue of being a bit quicker and more responsive, and having some verticality to it.
