It’s an easier out than admitting they’re uninformed or just plain wrong.

[–] folaht@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I somehow read that as un-uniformed.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

either russian or chinese bot. lol

[–] pancake@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Those two countries make up a large part of the world together, and furthermore many other countries align with their views. I think the point of this "meme" is that dismissing those views as fringe risks normalizing only a small part of the global discourse.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i think that's the point of this trend -- an attempt to make important subject like genocide and ethnic cleansing feel more like astroturfed concern.

[–] pancake@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I feel like a lot of those things are entirely orthogonal to what side one chooses. Like, Russia attacks Ukraine, the US attacks Iran, China does ethnic cleansing (edit: I don't think that's the case, but Western media claim that), Israel does too. So the best we can do as regular citizens is to ensure we don't restrict our views.

China does ethnic cleansin

This is, to the best of my knowledge and research ability, not the case

[–] pancake@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I agree. I don't think it's the case and evidence seems to point that way. Edited for correctness.

[–] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

Would you mind describing your research process for anyone reading this thread in the future? I agree and came to the same conclusion. There simply isn't enough evidence to support the claim.

Context to the global south?

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

People where I live have opinions about things that when you write on Lemmy and Reddit get accused you of being a Russian bot or trying to influence never ending USAmerican elections as if they (USAmericans) live in a democracy and meme posts to a niche international community of open source software with around 40k active users matters.

[–] Reddfugee42@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can you give us an example of one of those opinions?

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 12 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Off the top of my head?

  1. USA and Europe are the authoritarian masters of a internationalist capitalist empire that are bad actors and the actual "axis of evil"
  2. NATO is part of a global order that promotes and projects western imperial military interests and exists to reinforce US/EU weapons manufacturer sales and use.
  3. Hamas are heroes.
  4. Hezbollah are heroes.
  5. China would be a better steward of a global economic order than the US/EU capitalist empires of the past 500 years and we do not believe the Chinese have the same imperial ambitions.
  6. The USA is not a democracy, it is an oligarchy with a fixed political structure that has nothing to do with what the people there want or vote for.
  7. White people in the USA are settler petite bourgeois and not part of the global proletariat. They are not allies, they are enemies.
  8. There is no difference between a white American and an Israeli
  9. Donald Trump isn't an aberration of US politics and is par for the course. He is not a foreign asset or brought to power by Russia and is in fact the most American thing ever.
  10. It was in fact the US who over threw the Russian government and installed a president there. Putin and the Russian capitalist oligarchs are mercenaries who typically work for the US but have fallen from favor and are being attacked now to balkanize the region for profit.
[–] i_ben_fine@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I want to read so much more about point 10

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The US conducted the cold war to force the SU into a spending spiral that collapsed their economy. They then spent billions of dollars to install Yeltsin into power. Putin came up through the FSB and and the connections to leverage the oligarchy and institute mafia control of the country. They then worked with the Americans for decades to sell them space launches, military assistance, natural resources and purchase financial services. When the whims of American empire changed they started to poke at Russian sovereignty over and over with an aim to collapse the nation for profit.

  1. Instead of disbanding NATO when the SU fell, they expanded it into former Soviet states and entered them into mutual military purchasing agreements with the US.
  2. Funding separatist and terrorist groups throughout the Russian periphery to increase military pressure on Russia (Georgia, Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan)
  3. Used the CIA and other NGO groups in Ukraine to overthrow their government to one that is friendly to the US/EU and hostile Russia causing a civil war where Russian speaking people live in Ukraine and a decade of fighting.
  4. Russia didn't invade out of nowhere, they were responding to ongoing fighting in Russian majority areas. Do I personally think the "SMO" was a good move? No, but do I understand it and think that Russia poses a structural threat to US/EU interests? Also no.
  5. They conducted a massive military build up in countries surrounding Russia.
  6. The US took all of the Russian money in US/EU banking institutions and kept it. If you are holding a huge percentage of someones capital/money hostage and they have no recourse to unfreeze their assets under your management, who controls who? Don't you think that if the Russians had full control over the US government thru illicit means or "kompromat" on Donald Trump that the first course of action would be to unfreeze their assets? People in the US believe Putin was the puppeteer on his meetings with Trump but in reality this person (Putin) was going to their boss and asking for their money back and being told no. The Russian response was to state plainly that Donald Trump is not in control of the US and isn't worth speaking to and that Americans are "agreement incapable" are these the words and actions of the person with an upper hand?
  7. The Anglo empire have wanted to break apart the Russian empire since the 19th century. It is a long term historic objective of US/UK imperial interests going back to the Crimean war and before. It was only interrupted by the challenge of an Imperial Germany. The US/UK empires want Russia to pay for the October Revolution in particular with full collapse and balkanization.
  8. The Anglo empire wants to split up Russia into its constituent republics and states and pit every one against each other for their profit. They want to sell weapons to the Tartars, they want to extract the natural resources at a discount.
[–] i_ben_fine@midwest.social 5 points 1 week ago

Thank you for such a thorough response. That's a lot for me to learn about.

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The US isn't an oligarchy, but Trump isn't an aberration?

[–] Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The US is an oligarchy, not a democracy, which means Trump, an oligarch, isn't an aberation.

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Oh! I was reading the whole list as the POV of bad opinions, not OPs opinions opposing other common opinions. It all makes much more sense.
