Two men have received jail sentences for their roles in the 2019 theft of an 18-karat gold toilet from the mansion. The €5.5 million artwork, which satirized consumerism, was once offered on loan to Donald Trump.

Michael Jones, 39, received a 27-month sentence, with the judge saying he could not be sure he was part of the gang that carried out the burglary, though he was found guilty of having carried out reconnaissance at the stately home preceding the crime.

That reconnaissance included trying out the facility a day before the theft, an experience he described to the court as "splendid."

😂😂

So the jury found him guilty but it doesn't sound like the judge is convinced of his guilt, or at least it sounds like theres little viable evidence that he's associated with the robbers. What other reconnaissance could he have done that would make him guilty? How is using a toilet for it's intended purpose reconnaissance? So many questions!

How is using a toilet for it's intended purpose reconnaissance?

I'm doing reconnaissance as we speak.

[–] drspod@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How would you describe the experience?

I wonder where standard and splendid fit on the shitoscale. Perfection has to be where you've been waiting ages and you finally log out and you feel about 50kg lighter, and only requires a single wipe.

I'll let someone else have the fun of describing the other end of the scale...

My first thought was that the folks in Blenheim Palace stole Donald Trump's favourite toilet!

Gold is a pretty soft metal, not sure loaning it to "224 lbs" Trump is a great plan.

It's 18 karat, not 24, so 75% gold and 25% probably silver.
That makes it a significantly harder alloy than pure gold.

[–] Jumuta@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (5 children)

the carat is such a horrendous unit, why can't we just start saying 75% gold

it's insane that a unit can be a measurement of mass in one case and a measurement of purity in another

[–] Darleys_Brew@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Carrots aren’t awful, they help you see in the dark.

More seriously, they should donate this to a museum and have a regular toilet. Rich scum.

[–] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Interestingly in the US it isn't, gold is measured in Karat (k/Kt), and Carat (ct) is the unit of weight.

1 Karat is 1/24th gold, 1 Carat is 200 milligrams.

The pound is a unit of mass, of force, and of currency.

[–] kayky@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Not from a scientific perspective, no. It would just be a measurement of currency.

Mass is measured in grams, force is measured in Newtons.

[–] Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

It's probably purposeful obscurity, a marketing move for gold and jewelry.
Other alloys are described as ratios of elements.

At least I am starting to see carat fall out of use as a unit of weight, maybe from diamond manufacturing slowly making diamonds more of a commodity product.

It'll probably take until we stop obsessing over gold before we can get rid of karat.

[–] lnxtx@feddit.nl 1 points 1 day ago

Or standardize alloys: nice 1337 gold alloy ring.

petty dictators love gold toilets, tramp is not that different from saddam, really. I'm imagining tramp saying saddam was a great guy. grifter twin souls.
