Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

A bit unrelated to the joke, but I am sad at how acceptable it has become taking pictures of people in public ~~to make fun of them.~~

    [–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Street photography isn’t so bad, as long as it’s not a hidden cam.

I don’t generally like my picture taken, but I’d have no problem if it just some person with a real camera taking casual pictures of crowds for fun.

What makes it creepy (to me) if it’s someone trying to hide it with a smartphone, or Meta glasses.

edit: It’s also nothing new. Street photographers have been around forever, long before digital cameras. It was pretty acceptable when I was a kid with a flip phone.

I made a pull request today! It didn't get merged but I think I can use the fork on my own. How do I switch Firefox a local PDF.js without recompiling the whole browser?

    [–] softwarist@programming.dev 1 points 3 hours ago

Firefox loads PDF.js using a resource URL (resource://) and those are sourced from a JAR file (omni.ja) so you would have to find that file in your local installation and patch the archive with your customized version.

In what world are two women having a conversation on their own interested in a random dude on a train anyway?

    [–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 21 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

Was going to say. This seems like the most polite kind of person you're going to meet on the subway. Dude's not manspreading, not gawking, not trying to get their attention, literally bumped up against a woman and not trying to cop a feel.

This is the Ideal Male Commuter. You may not like him, but this is what peak performance looks like.

    [–] renrenPDX@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

They’re all weird. Everyone knows you’re supposed to stare into the abyss until it’s time to get off at your stop.

    [–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 7 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You mean the abyssal screen of one's smartphone?

    [–] renrenPDX@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Sure, or the thousand yard stare, if you’re old school.

    [–] MadPsyentist@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 hours ago

"Oh wow! This is the most interesting power pole i think i have ever seen. WAIT!... This other power pole is much more interesting!"

    [–] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 30 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Wow a man not sexually assaulting women in the train. What a creep

    [–] cosmos8188@leminal.space 3 points 15 hours ago

Yep all is cool until he does exactly that and the script turns upside down.

OH! When a man does it he's "based" but when I'm too busy contributing to FOSS I'm "frigid". Rude!

    [–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I imagine their conversation's about writer modes for emacs.

    [–] foo@feddit.uk 2 points 11 hours ago

I knew it! He's must be using vim. Mystery solved.

    [–] dunestorm@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe he already has a partner or is doing something important...

    [–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 12 hours ago

Yes, he's doing something important by contributing to open source.

    [–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago

Why would he bother risking harassment allegations from strangers?

    [–] hotnotdeadyet@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

    Literally me

    [–] DaGreenGobbo@feddit.uk 10 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Clearly he should be inviting then to murder his wife in exchange for him murdering their husbands. That's what strangers on a train do, right?

Wish I was intelligent enough to contribute meaningfully. Instead I just consume and occasionally donate.

Thank you all for your kind replies. Wasn't fishing for encouragement but I do appreciate it.

    [–] jj4211@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

If you ever want to grow capability of technical contributions, you are welcome but not necessary.

I would much prefer someone that accepts their level of contribution than one who thinks "Claude can make me a valuable contributor even if I have no idea how to".

    [–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 3 points 11 hours ago

From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs.

    [–] affiliate@lemmy.world 8 points 17 hours ago

    Donating is a meaningful contribution

    [–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 16 points 22 hours ago

That's enough, if there's something you like then contributing to documentation is something that's more available to the general populace.

    [–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (4 children)

    Hey now...

I really don't mean this as an insult, but you don't need to be 'smart' to contribute.

Take a picture of a bunny, post it to bun alert.

Take a picture of your balls, post it to gone wild.

(well ok maybe don't jump straight to that)

Ask a stupid question on no stupid questions.

Have a political opinion, on the internet.

Find a niche comm for a video game and ask something about it.

Find a neat chart and post it to data is beautiful.

Probably the worst thing that can happen is ... some random assholes give you the wrong color arrow thingy. Who cares! Fuck em! Its just numbers on a screen!

    [–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Ask a stupid question on no stupid questions.

Hey, it's no stupid questions. Only smart questions allowed.

imagine not knowing basic public transport etiquette.

two friends sitting next to you is not an invite for sex.

    [–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 15 points 19 hours ago

Public transport etiquette is not standing in front of the door while people get out. Not hitting on every girl that sits next to you is like... basic human decency.

    [–] MyNameIsRichard@lemmy.ml 4 points 16 hours ago

You clearly don't watch the same films I do!

    [–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 57 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Agreed. The woman in the middle should tell the other to please stop interrupting and continue pair programming

Sitting next to a (supposedly) random dude and visibly being comfortable and not nervous is a green flag for the programmer.

It means he’s showered in the last week.

"You're near a woman and aren't sexually assaulting them? What are you gay?"

    [–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 20 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Guys is it gay to respect women?

    [–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 16 hours ago

Too many think it is gay to respect anything.

But they start crying when they don't get the respect they should be giving to others.

    [–] fenrasulfr@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Well considering pleasuring your girlfriend or wife is considered gay, probably yes.
