From an international perspective, we know:

  • New York
  • LA
  • Washington DC
  • Miami
  • Las Vegas
  • New Orleans
  • San Francisco
  • Chicago
  • Boston
  • Houston
  • Philadelphia
  • Seattle

Is there anywhere else that’s a world-renowned contender?

The last handful on there are probably in name only, and we couldn’t tell them apart. The top spots probably have the most distinct flavours and/or famous landmarks

Some other famous US cities:

  • Springfield
  • Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Pawnee, Indiana
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Quahog, Rhode Island
  • New New York, New York
  • Metropolis
  • Gotham City
  • South Park, Colorado

Mexico City is the largest city in North America. Now if they said US that's a different story

I'm curious, where are you from that "American" used on its own doesn't specifically indicate united-states-of-?

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Latinamerican here. "American" for us is someone who was born in the Americas... i bet it is the same for all latinamerica.

American is slang for something or somebody from the US. I live near the canadian border.

Canadians, Mexicans and everyone in South America all are technically "americans" and refer to themselves as such occasionally, often because its a necessary descriptor for people from particular continents in the same way "eurasian" is used to describe a multicontinental land mass.

Personally, I'd encourage people to re-adopt the word "Yankees" for US people, its a way funnier word.

Too many Confederate/Rebel/MAGA flags still flying for that.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

I think its funnier to upset them by calling them yankees.

If you specifically want to call them something dumb it doesn't hurt to call them something new: S'ankees, Sou'r krauts, corn krauts, texmex, texish, etc.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

I prefer Y'all Quaeda .

[–] JargonWagon@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

It's a stamce on here some people have to dub "American" as belonging to all of North and South America. It's basically just being anti-US as much of Lemmy is.

[–] Pegajace@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

They didn't say "North American," they said "American." Everyone who speaks English understands that "America" on its own is almost always in reference to the USA.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Geographically speaking it should be either Seattle or Atlanta, it should be a list of 5 tbh

[–] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 92 points 2 days ago (3 children)

The fourth major US city is Springfield. Which Springfield, you ask? Any and all.

It's Jacksonville, FL obviously.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 55 points 2 days ago (27 children)

Correct. The cities in rotation are Dallas (the capital of oil), Houston (the other capital of oil), Atlanta (the capital of black people), Miami (the capital of Latino people), SF (the capital of rich people), and DC (the capital).
