Big tech pays them, that is all they care about. In general (there are very few exceptions) a politician's only goal is to get elected. Everything else is secondary. Having loads of money helps getting elected.

Someone should tell the politicians of both parties that, because they are still bending over for big tech.
Yuuup. Government has completed decoupled from public preferences, particularly on the Democratic side.
Uh…what? Both teams equally decoupled. I take that back, Republicans more decoupled, but have better branding.
Republican Party loves catering to big tech just as much, if not more.
Republicans do some things their base wants. Democrats do zero things their base wants.
They've been playing ads around here claiming they don't use water anymore. Hopefully no one believes it.

Water could be overblown in some rare cases, if they have a well designed cooling system that doesn't just evaporate all the potable water... But that's way more expensive so none of them have that...
The water usage pales in comparison to the energy usage however...

The right will flip as soon as they get the messaging that they're supposed to. They now support child rape, so it's hard to believe this will be their breaking point.
It's indicative of the lack of benefit that LLMs are providing. If gen AI was providing tangible benefits to anyone, people would identify a need for data centres.
I think it's important to realize that a lot of these data centers aren't just doing LLM for chat bots
I'm guessing a lot of Meta's and xAI's data centers are mostly training and running content recognition and recommendation models.
Just speculating, but like HUGE embedding and CLIP models for high resolution databases of all the trash on Instagram/X/tiktok/YouTube paired with large multimodal Recurrent Nueral Nets that look at user's activity to recommend more content and ads
