Trees are hard for more than thirty seconds
Deciduous trees go out of their way to loose their leaves during winter. It's good for them because their leaves don't make enough energy in the darkness to justify the cost of keeping them alive.
Metaphors are cool, but this one doesn't strike me as very realistic.
