Imagine caring if someone texts you back immediately. Real maturity is recognizing that most adults have other things going on and can't/won't be glued to their phone all day long.

I read the meaning as someone thinking it weird to text back immediately. That was the offense. As if you should play it cool and wait to respond.
I personally respond quickly if I'm holding my phone and the message comes in, usually.
I make sure to age my replies. If someone's not dying, give that shit a full 24 hours.

Also, I'm happy to text asap if we're planning something. If you're shooting me texts to small talk, I'm happy to chat, but you have to understand that I'll probably only start chatting when I'm really free if it's not important.

My comment mostly has to do with the 'mature' part, implying that the mature thing to do is to text someone back immediately. And conversely, not texting back immediately is immature.
That said, reading comprehension is not always my strong suit, so fair play. Me brain no work so good.
Yeah but like instantly instantly is weird. You kind of expect there to be a period where they free their hands, then check the message, then weigh up whether it warrants a conversation right now, then think what to say, then type it. Could take 30 seconds, could take 3 hours if they're fully busy and you get sidelined.
A reaponse in 2 seconds from cold open always sets me off balance.
You're thinking too much. Instant responses are not weird. Am I supposed to just wait for a bit so that youre wheels don't start turning in the most un charitable direction.

I mean, personally it's because I don't get a lot of messages in the first place, and most of the time I'm just lost in my thoughts and not actively busy so it's a nice change of pace. Now, even I'll admit 2 seconds is a little short, but I'm often ready with a response within 10

Educate me please, is this a real thing? Do people delay responses to act cool? In my day, extended chat conversations were a thing and kinda required immediate responses. Does nobody do that anymore?
Probably as long as Snapchat has existed. Especially since they were the first to show your little avatar peaking over the keyboard if you were in the chat at the same time.

No no no. The first to add the avatar that makes you look like a weirdo for just being in the same chat but not saying anything.
Youre old enough that chats didnt have a history, and if they waited long enough, you had to open a different message entirely to remember what you sent them!

Exactly what I was thinking. It's not that you don't get "immediate" feedback when somebody texts you... either by a sound or otherwise. Why wouldn't you respond to that if you have the time? Although I get it when somebody sends you a thousand messages (or voice ones) in a row. Then I also need a time out.
I delay texts both reading and responding to not be a slave to my phone or to your whims. I don't owe you immediate gratification. Texts are really disruptive. About 40% of the time that thing you asked me that I didn't respond to you about took care of itself or you figured it out yourself and are maybe better for it.
If texts are disruptive then an unsolicited phone call is an affront to all creation
Sure. Treat them the same way. If you don't VM it's probably not important enough for me to call back. I'll Call you back when I'm driving, its a great time to talk. Also, you're not going to call me about as dumb as a thing as you are going to txt me. The threshold to interact this way is much higher, it's a natural BS screen.
It's just the current iteration of phone callback culture from the landline era. People had strong opinions about if you should call back dates or friends immediately or wait until the next day. The expectation of immediate response is a newer phenomenon.

You loose if you text back immediately, and you loose if you don't.
i feel like a lot of culture nowadays is questionable. a person with the fullest social calendar will still feel special if someone texts them the next day. 'i'm loved and wanted,' they'll think, even if they're annoyed and not interested in the person.
