Most people use a podhosting service like Podbean, iTunes, or Spotify. Sadly, thatβs where you need to go for most normies to find you.
That said, there is an open source self-hosting option that ties in with the fediverse called castopod which is really easy to use and looks nice. Iirc they can also tie into other platforms (donβt quote me on that), but I never really needed to when I was hosting mine.
It's actually pretty easy if you can get a website running with WordPress (lots of easy options out there).
All you need to do once you have that element sorted you can link spotify, iTunes, etc.to.your site (you just need a login) and you're away.
Over covid my wife and I podcasted for our own pleasure (and the mild amusement of our mates) and all I needed was some managed hosting and an internet connection to get it running.
A podcast is basically a blog with RSS feed where all the entries are audio files. So in theory you could do it that way it's probably be a bit of a job to set up, then serving the files would take a fair bit of bandwidth (if it gets even moderately popular), encoding to something like OPUS format might help if playback support in podcast players is widespread (MP3, AAC or OGG Vorbis might be a better fallback.
The audio editor I would choose is Audacity it's been the gold standard for a free audio recorder/editor for years.
Careful with hosted podcasting services terms and conditions they can be restrictive with what you can do with your podcast later.

It just seemed an unnessecary remark to make, and I've been put off doing things because of comments like that enough that I felt a counter would have been a nice thing to see.
If there's one thing the world doesn't need it's another up and coming podcaster.
I'd rather that than some miserable cunt telling people not to do things they enjoy.
