I don’t take good pictures 'cause I have the kind of beauty that moves.

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
Such a funny juxtaposition from the Beatles.
The best version is "Across the Universe" from Let it Be... Naked
Let it be... Naked is great.
Phil Spector really ruined Get Back/Let it Be imo
The years have seemed short but the days go slowly by Two loose kites falling from the sky Drawn to the ground and an end to flight
-The Shins - "Pink Bullets"
“No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government,
Always hopeful yet discontent,
He knows changes aren’t permanent,
But change is.”
Rush - Tom Sawyer
All creatures born are born to die / but before then survive / some creatures born they never live / but still they are alive
Gwar - Biledriver
ive got six things on my mind
youre no longer one of them
(desire as a sylph figured creature who changes her mind)
desire as by prefab sprout
Fuck Bill O’Reilly
- Tyler the Creator, Radicals
"It's Never Been a Fair Fight" from Craig Finn
They said there weren't any rules But there were so many goddamn rules They said that they'd be cool But there were so many goddamn rules
If the cops shut down the shows Just remember that we tried And I'll meet you at the place we crashed In 1999 If you're still staying there I'll take that as a sign That the drugs all ganged up on you It's never been a fair fight
Growing up in the punk scene and losing a lot of friends, the whole song really hits me hard.
When the wind's against you Remember this insight That's the optimal condition For birds to take flight Now the wind's against you Don't give up the fight
Enter Shikari - Airfield
Personally would have gone with:
We live so subserviently,
Accepting all normality.
Drenched in routine,
Doused in the forseen.
And yes granted we prosper,
But the fact that we prosper
Is even taken for grante-DAH!
Next year can wait 'till next year, I am here alive
Chainsaw brotherhood - Bourbon boys
"Sexual violence doesn't start and end with rape
It starts in our books and behind our school gates
Men are scared women will laugh in their face
Whereas women are scared it's their lives men will take"
Idles - Mother
I cried the first time I heard this song.
Seems to be a take on the Margaret Atwood quote. Courtney Barnett has a similar line where she admits to basically taking the quote word for word:
I want to walk in the park in the dark, men are scared that women will laugh at them
I want to walk in the park in the dark, women are scared that men will kill them
It's a common sentiment among women and feminists for sure. There was something particularly moving about hearing it from an all male band.
For sure. I just thought it was worth pointing out that it originated with a quote from a lecture by Margaret Atwood
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/188039-men-are-afraid-that-women-will-laugh-at-them-women
Though I'm sure it's possible that she heard it from somewhere else
Oh I will always support quotes from Atwood and Barnett :)
Ben Gibbard sure writes some poignant lyrics, e.g.:
You may tire of me
As our December sun is setting
Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
But these wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside
Someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident
I'm not here; this isn't happening 🎵
Relatable lines from Thom Yorke in Radiohead's "How to disappear completely" off of Kid A.
Based on a true story.
A recent one from Tierra Whack
The more I get to know you the more I think less of you
A fellow Whack fan?! I really liked the new album
She is such a vibe I am down with.
Her new album is burning slower with me but the more I listen the more I love it.
I felt a little called out because I wasn't into the more pop-focused stuff she was doing and then she opens the album with "They said I should rap more, what more can I ask for?" lol
Yeahhhh we really do like your rapping, I didn't mean to pigeonhole you...
Pull up rockin', smack a racist in the face
Jet out, and leave 'em screamin' in the place
I come straight from the heart, you come straight from hate
And if you’re threatenin' someone I ain’t gonna sit around and wait
I just smacked two cops, I’m waiting to see what the case is
Because my hands automatically smack people who are racist
- 2 Mello, Pull Up
Did you ever wonder why we had to run run for shelter when the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath the clear blue sky?
Talking Heads - (Nothing but) Flowers
Here we stand
Like an Adam and Eve
Waterfalls
Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
Birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs, cars have run on gasoline
Where? Where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowersThere was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
You've got it, you've got itWe caught a rattlesnake
Now we've got something for dinner
You've got it, you've got itThere was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
You've got it, you've got itIf this is paradise
I wish I had a lawn mower
You've got it, you've got itYears ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With the beautiful highway
This used to be real estate, now it's only fields and trees
Where? Where is the town?
Now, it's nothing but flowersThe highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But, I guess I was wrongOnce there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
You've got it, you've got itThis was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
You've got it, you've got itI miss the honky tonks
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
You've got it, you've got itAnd as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
You've got it, you've got itI dream of cherry pies
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
You've got it, you've got itWe used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
You've got it, you've got itThis was a discount store
Now it's turned into a cornfield
You've got it, you've got itDon't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle
Their best song IMO, and weirdly a song many who are fans haven't heard.
Why would I stop loving you, a hundred years from now, it’s only time? It’s only time.
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In an aeroplane over the sea
Scatman John, Scatman's world:
[Verse 1] Everybody's talkin' something very shocking Just to keep on blockin' what they're feelin' inside But listen to me brother, you just keep on walkin' 'Cause you and me and sister ain't got nothing to hide Scatman, fat man, black and white and brown man Tell me 'bout the color of your soul If part of your solution isn't ending the pollution Then I don't wanna hear your stories told I wanna welcome you to Scatman's World
[Verse 2] Everybody's born to compete as he chooses But how can someone win if winning means that someone loses? I sit and see and wonder what it's like to be in touch No wonder all my brothers and my sisters need a crutch I wanna be a human being, not a human doing I couldn't keep that pace up if I tried The source of my intention really isn't crime prevention My intention is prevention of the lie Yeah, welcome to the Scatman's World
"And it's your face, I'm looking for, on every street".
That one will haunt me for the rest of my life. For reasons similar to Knopfler's.
For me it's probably:
"Don't you do it
You're not even you yet"
I first heard Otep's Perfectly Flawed when I was early in transition and deeply suicidal. I'd already been hospitalized for it a couple of times. And then I heard this song and felt like it was speaking right at me. I'm still alive. Still depressed and working on it, but alive with the intention to continue. I don't know if the song actually helped or if it was all the other things I've tried, but it still resonates fondly for me so I'm comfortable calling that lyric my favorite.
From the Eagles, The Last Resort. I love the whole song but this verse hits me hardest.
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
But we have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs
And justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny
And in the name of God
I can't explain to y'all how much time I don't have for this
Infinite amounts that ban exactly it, let's pack it in
Or spin some actual axes at each other, happy hunting
The trick is how to trap and stuff what's added up to nothing
Aesop Rock - The Cut
The moment that I let go of it was the moment I got more than I could handle. The moment I jumped off of it was the moment that I touched down.
Thank U - Alanis Morissette
Strangers passing in the street by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me.
Echoes - Pink Floyd
All the other kids with the pumped-up kicks You better run, better run faster than my bullet
The flames of hell they seemed so high
When I could barely see over the pew
I was only a boy when they told me that lie
But lord it felt so true
And that's a hell of a thing to do to a kid
Just to teach him right from wrong
You can burn in hell for the rest of your days
Or you can choose to sing along
Found this song on shuffle during a drive and had to pull over to cry out some religious trauma.
Favorite lyric is the sort of thing that changes constantly, but my favorite lyricist right now is undoubtedly Vessel from Sleep Token
Man just casually busts out bars like
"My, my, those eyes like fire, I'm a winged insect, you're a funeral pyre"
And
"Even if the earth breaks like burnt skin, And the heavens just won't open up for me"
But I'm also going to give a shout out to The Midnight for some genuinely insane lines.
"If the rent's too high we'll just buy cheaper wine" is one of the most uncomfortably present lyrics I have ever heard.
The last one reminds me of the chorus of Buckingham Rabbit by The Silver Jews (RIP):
and so the rent became whiskey. And then my life became risky...
As soon as you're born, they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home, and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever, and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy, you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function, you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be

All About the Pentiums, Weird Al
As a child, an easy listening radio station soothed me to sleep. It kept the monsters at bay. I would not unpack nor understand the psychological abuse I suffered at home for decades. The song now reminds me that a late bloomer can still be beautiful. Crushes me to death every time.
It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live
Fun fact, the woman who wrote this song, Amanda McBroom, also played JAG Capt. Phillipa Louvois in the incredible Star Trek: TNG episode Measure of a Man
Let me take your hands
I'm shaking like milk
"Hamlet" by the group "Wise Guys". The whole song text is a very good summary of Shakespeare's text. Actually better than something I've seen being used in schools. And, of course, with a twinkle in the eyes.
Pretty much everything from Aesop rock.
Here an example.
Death wish from day one, I wake up and it rain blood
Raincheck these fuck shows, I'm donezo, my brain's mush
Drumroll, I might piss straight, loose tooth in my spit shake
Every possible Futurama come trooping out of his pill case
Every time I look up from the paper I see animals exhibiting irregular behavior
Even though I know that it's a warning I am back on my old shit again like any other morning
Every time I peek out from the corner Birds are flying belly-side-up, fish are walking out the water
Even though it seem legit I'm right here til the season dip
I ain't seen shit I ain't seen shit
