Palm Pre. Aside from the OS itself, I miss the little paratrooper game that was seemingly, unfortunately, exclusive to WebOS.

The T-Mobile G1 was incredible. I wish they would remake it for today. A slide out keyboard, and a little mouse ball. It was fucking fantastic.

Blackberry 7230, I think. I looked up the timeline, and that looks like the right one, but the article says it was color. Mine was black and white. My mom got it for me because I loved to read, and could use it to read books outside.

And at one point between the blackberry and my first android, my mom got me this phone with a built in MP3 player. It was so friggin thick, but it could hold so much music, and had an awesome camera. Around the same time, my buddy had a phone with a camera with a telescopic lense that looked more like a traditional camera than a phone.

I had an odd and rare one: the LG AX490. Most of the phone was unremarkable, other than being somewhat car-shaped when closed, but it had an innovative keyboard system. There was a normal phone keypad, maybe slightly shrunk, but at the corners of each number button was a tiny raised button for each letter of the alphabet. It made anything text-related in the phone a breeze while keeping the normal flip phone shape.

I still have it, but reminisce is all that I can do because I have no landline service to plug it in. It's the Trimline phone that we had when I was growing up. I think it was the one my parents previously rented from Wisconsin Bell, then bought after the breakup of AT&T when they had to let customer-owned devices connect to the network. It sits in the superannuated telephone nook in my kitchen, because, why not?

Blackberry phones worked everywhere, anywhere in the world, it was the only system that worked during 9/11.

physical keyboards were faster and more accurate.

Nokia 6133, Flip phone that had a button which popped it open. Nothing else has felt as cool as pushing that button to answer a call.

My Motorola T720. That thing took a lot of beatings and somehow survived it all. Haven't used it in twenty years, but still have it.

I want my LG V20 back.

Built in quad-dac that beat fiio devices, and it came apart in 16 screws. Hell all the connectors where even on ribbon cables for ezpz repair jobs

Make that phone with a modern SoC, Graphene OS, and a pine-phone esque back-cover keyboard, and I'd be in cellular heaven.

Nope. The only old phone I'm still impressed by was the old Motorola Razor flip phone. I had a blue one and my wife had a pink one. The number of times that phone rode through the washer and dryer without ever hesitating was amazing.

My current phone is a Samsung Galaxy S10. It's the first smart phone I've had that hasn't started glitching after the first two years. I ordered it on July 29, 2020, and it's still going strong with no signs of stopping. I've never been forced to do so much as factory reset it. Every previous phone I've spent the last year or so I had it trying to coax it into lasting just a little longer.

I've replaced the factory-installed screen protector and the otter case I bought for this phone once. When I had the phone out of the old case and stripped of the screen protector, it still looked brand new.

Nokia 3650 was my first smartphone and it was weird and quirky and awesome.

One company I worked at gave us all BlackBerrys (at least those of us who needed phones). BlackBerry was a little outdated at that point but then they released the BlackBerry 10 OS. It was actually decent, but the build quality on the Q10 I had didn’t match their earlier phones. It came too late to save Research in Motion, but I always felt if they’d developed it 5 or maybe even fewer years earlier then they might’ve survived at least as corporate phones. They were so far gone at that point, though, that BlackBerry put out a press release celebrating our company committing to buy a couple thousand phones.

Sidekick (danger/tmobile). that layout with physical keyboard and the screen that rests over it or flips 180° above it was so cool.

Palm Treo was also pretty nice. Drug Wars, Space Trader, and AOL Instant Messenger all in one place!

Microsoft is now the architect of a lot of shit. But the Windows Phone systems were surprisingly good, and a competitive alternative to iOS and Android. Even using Internet Explorer for its browser wasn’t so bad, since it was the late years of the browser when they understood standards compliance was critical, and followed them entirely.

Its moderate success in outer regions was delivered as an overpromise that lead to Windows 8 as a very “fullscreen touchscreen” OS, so it especially sucks that its follow-on legacy was so tarnished.

Motorola Razr (the first ones).

All the time. I'm an Apple guy, but I also have an Android phone. It's a Galaxy S10 and despite being 7 years old, I still like it. I kinda want to replace it (the Fairphone 6+ is freakin' awesome in green!) but it still gets the job done. I do miss my old Galaxy S3 sometimes, the custom firmware I ran on it. My favourite was called LiquidSmooth and it was based on Android 2.1 or 2.2 (Jellybean). It was a different world back then. I never woulda considered an iPhone back then. Now all phones are kinda samey. I use an iPhone because it's boring (it's consistent). I miss when being an Android user meant you were on an adventure. Now they're just iPhones with spyware. (They were before too, but you could do more about it. And yes, I know GrapheneOS exists and so does LineageOS — I remember when LineageOS was called CyanogenMod.)

Not as old, but I miss using my Essentials PH-1. It had stock android instead of a carrier or maker version of android and some really cool features.

The add-on possibilities looked good, since it had two power pads on the back with a magnet, and wireless USB interface.

You could mag click on adapters to add hardware.

I had the 360 video camera add on, and the company folded before I had a chance to purchase the audio DAC headphone add on.

I reminisce about the time when I would get a new phone and then spent a whole day going through the settings and tweaking stuff.

Setting up a new phone now is arguably easier and faster but also just boring

I don't really reminisce, but lament having a Nokia N9 with the meego os and watching Microsoft buy the company and run it into the ground.

The phone was small, quite heavy in comparison, but the icons and ui worked (and still works) with the low px-res UI.

I miss my Nexus 6. It was my first Android phone, and got me into tinkering with android. I remember that the device codename, relevant for finding compatible ROMs, was "shamu". I miss that big old whale

A lot of what I miss is the software side of things. Google Assistant used to be way more capable than it is now. And now they're replacing that entirely with Gemini.

I loved my Sidekick 2, I love a real keyboard.

I am sad they switched off 2G some time ago here, I liked calling with my Nokia 6150 once in a while.

Nah. I just wish I could get the phone I want at a good price. Which is a dumb (feature) phone where you can connect by usb and edit things like the calendar and contacts in a web browser and heck the phones settings and such. More importantly that it have a data connection and you could click a button to have it act as an access point and give you a code to use on your laptop to connect to it. I don't feel those feature should more than double a cheap dumb phones price.

My old slimline POTS phone is still mounted to the wall in my kitchen for nostalgia's sake.

I had a nokia brick for a decade....like actually. It had fantastic games. I even got ebook (as txt) working.

I miss my original Motorola droid phone. With the USB on the side...with accessories like the charger that made it look like a nightstand alarm clock...

My touch slide. Texting was so tactile and fun. I had snake on it and one more game I can't remember. I didn't need more.

I am writing this on my Bluefox NX1... Android 15, 8gb ram, 128 GB storage. 4" on the diagonal, about three days battery. Crappy sound, crappy camera, finicky keyboard but autocorrect is a thing. Bluetooth earbuds and I don't care about the camera most days. Dual SIM, 135$. Been using it exclusively for almost a year now.
