Depends on the goal. No one is going to look at 99.9% of my photos, ever. Of the remainder, 99% of them they will look at exactly once. No one would really miss them if they were gone, not even me. Get a few good quality prints of important stuff for moments like "that's your great grandfather Andrew". No one cares about the coffee I had last Tuesday.
Self hosting just replaces one set of failure points with another. If I get hit by a bus, my stuff will keep running for a while, but no one will have the skill or motivation to keep it running, or export the data to something else.
